Danny Benshalom

Dany Benshalom

I was born in Budapest, Hungary, at the end of World War II-July 21st 1945, to parents who were leaders of the Jewish underground resistance in Hungary.

We came to Israel in 1947, as illegal immigrants, with my mother and I posing as mother and daughter with false papers.

We arrived at Kibbutz Ha`ogen in the Cheffer Valley, and here I spent most of my childhood. Since my dad was an ambassador to different countries, I lived a few years in Czechoslovakia in Europe and in Mali, South Africa, where I learned French and English.

After my release from the army service, I continued my kibbutz life as a member, and built my family. I married Noga, who came from Kibbutz Ramot Menashe, and is herself a teacher for movement and dance as well as Physical Education and Yoga teacher. Like me, she too is a certified Israeli Folk Dance instructor. We have raised a daughter and 3 sons, and today, we are grandparents to 4 grandchildren.

To Israeli dancing I was drawn quite by chance. After the 6 Day war, I took part in a special workshop for Purim in Beit Hahistadrut in Tel Aviv and got hooked. I came home and immediately started to deal with the subject.

In 1967 I established the regional Cheffer Valley dance session with about 15 participants. During its first years, the session took place alternating among the kibbutzim in the area and Moshav Beit Cherut.

Today, Noga and I lead a great session every Sunday night, which has been on going for the past 40 years (it is the most Veteran session in Israel) in Kibbutz Givat Chayim Me`uchad. This year, we celebrated 40 years to our session in a special great and memorable party with hundreds of dancers and guests from all over the country.
